Desert
Standin here, in the searing heat,
I hear a voice call to me.
It whispers ever so softly in my ear.
I run.
Galloping, sprinting, gallavanting--I race.
Tripping, stumbling, fumbling--I fall.
Down, down, down, into the hot, burning sand.
I stare upwards, blankly, into the sapphire
sky.
My breath is heavy.
A voice drills into my ears.
I thought I had given up hope,
But the voice showed me I hadn’t.
I struggle to stand; I finally do.
This time I don’t run.
I walk.
Mile after mile, day after day,
I cross the expanse, looking.
Searching for something I’ve lost.
Coming up over a dune,
I spot a magnificent building.
Gaining my strength,
I run towards it.
When I approach the door, breathless, hot,
thirsty, and tired,
It opens by some ghostly hand.
Cautiously, I step through.
I see another door a few feet from this one.
With each pained, shuffling step,
I reach that door.
It also opens magically.
I step within the doorway.
Way down at the other end of this room,
There’s a throne.
A man is perched there.
Wincing, I make my way down to this man.
I know I must look a fright.
Robes disheveled, feet blistered and callused.
Finally, I fall to my knees in front of him.
I look up, and see it’s him.
The one I lost and was looking for.
I now know what my mission was.
To find him.
My lost love.
I
smile.
